{"id":1217,"date":"2013-06-18T11:53:41","date_gmt":"2013-06-18T10:53:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bluecourtdental.com\/cosmetic-dentist-harrow\/?p=1217"},"modified":"2016-07-20T09:44:30","modified_gmt":"2016-07-20T08:44:30","slug":"top-tips-for-people-with-sensitive-teeth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bluecourtdental.com\/cosmetic-dentist-harrow\/dentistry\/top-tips-for-people-with-sensitive-teeth\/","title":{"rendered":"Top tips for people with sensitive teeth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We often have people come to our dental practice with sensitive teeth and so we thought we would provide some top tips for people in this situation.<\/p>\n<h3>Blue Court Dental Practice in Harrow&#8217;s top tips for people with sensitive teeth<\/h3>\n<p>01 Make sure you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluecourtdental.com\/dental-hygiene-middlesex.html\">cleaning your teeth properly<\/a>.\u00a0 A simple message but if bacteria and plaque build up on the teeth they produce acids and toxins that attack the teeth and gums.\u00a0 These acids can cause decay and make the teeth uncomfortable, whilst the toxins can cause the gums to shrink away from the teeth making the situation worse.\u00a0 Always remember to clean your teeth.<\/p>\n<p>02 Avoid acidic food and drink.\u00a0 Certain foods contain a great deal of acid, examples are many types of fruit; oranges, lemons, apples etc which contain citric acid.\u00a0 Some fizzy drinks like cola and lemonade, alcoholic drinks like sparkling wines and drinks with mixers are also high in acid.\u00a0 Using a straw to drink through reduces the amount of liquid that goes onto the teeth and helps sensitive teeth.<\/p>\n<p>03 Avoid extremes of hot or cold.\u00a0 <em>Sensitivity of teeth<\/em> is believed to be due to movement of fluids along tiny tubes on the root surface.\u00a0 Extremes of hot or cold move the fluid in these tubes causing pain.\u00a0 The nerve is not actually exposed, but it can feel very uncomfortable.\u00a0 Luke warm drinks can usually be tolerated well.<\/p>\n<p>04 Use a sensitive formula toothpaste.\u00a0 There are many good toothpastes that can help reduce sensitivity.\u00a0 It is often essential to use them for a few weeks to feel the effect and they work better if some of the toothpaste is rubbed into the area and left to soak in.\u00a0 Some mouthwashes that contain fluoride can also be helpful.\u00a0 Ask your dentist or hygienist for advice.<\/p>\n<p>05 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluecourtdental.com\/cosmetic-dentists-middlesex.html\">Have a dental examination<\/a>.\u00a0 Although sensitivity is often caused by the problems mentioned, there may be other reasons for the discomfort.\u00a0 It is always worth seeking professional advice in case there is some decay, a cracked tooth or broken filling.\u00a0 Your dentist will be pleased to discuss your needs and offer you tailored help and advice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We often have people come to our dental practice with sensitive teeth and so we thought we would provide some top tips for people in this situation.
