Many patients will suffer from gum disease at some point in their life. Common symptoms include red, swollen gums that bleed when you brush your teeth. Screening for gum disease forms an integral part of your routine examination.
Your gums are like cushions for your teeth: they surround the teeth in the jaws and help to support them. Looking after your gums is just as important as looking after your teeth.
The early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. When gingivitis is left untreated it can develop further into a type of infection known as periodontitis, which affects the entire area surrounding the tooth, including the bone beneath the teeth. It is vital to avoid periodontitis because if it is not treated, it can result in you losing a tooth.
To keep your mouth healthy we recommend that you come in for regular hygiene appointments and dental examinations.
