This lady has had dentistry in the past but was unhappy with the appearance of her smile.  She disliked the colour of her front teeth, none of them matched and wanted to improve the appearance by changing the shape and colour of them to give her a more natural looking smile.  To achieve this result, the teeth were first whitened and then the front four teeth were prepared for emax all porcelain crowns.  The new natural looking crowns were made to match her whiter teeth and the shape was changed to give her the smile she wanted.

The patient was delighted with her new improved smile.

Bluecourt dental practice in Harrow are honoured to be the dentist of Mr Ken Woolcott, aged 95 who has recently been awarded an MBE for services to the fitness industry in the 2012 Queens Birthday Honours List. Ken has had a long and distinguished career in sport and health which led him to create the highly successful Popmobility concept in 1967, this went on to change the face of personal fitness throughout the 1970s.

Ken says that the original idea behind Popmobility was to create a series of exercise routines for all ages designed to take the monotony out of exercises by setting them to music. At the time it was a totally original idea which made exercising fun. As the concept grew Popmobility exercise routines began to be used in general fitness training as well as tennis, gymnastics, badminton, cricket and netball. The company released three LP records in response to an overwhelming appeal from all over the country.

As a sports enthusiast,Kenwas also senior coach for the British Amateur Athletics Board and lives his life based on his 3Es principle:

  1. If you enjoy something…
  2. …you will find the enthusiasm
  3. …and if you have the enthusiasm you will find the energy to do it…

What a great sentiment to live life by.

We’d like to take this public opportunity to completely congratulate Ken on his lifetime achievements, for adding so much to the personal fitness world and for being recognised this with his MBE.

It is always great to receive feedback from our patients, and we love it even more when it’s like this…

“After searching for years for that Dentist that you have a great rapport with and that you can trust, we came across Dr. Nishan Dixit. We have been with him now for over 8 years and couldn’t be more satisfied. Not only is the quality of treatment we receive there great, but the friendly staff are more like an extended family making you feel comfortable at all times and —always providing a “reminder” call and doing their best to accommodate our busy schedules.

He is the only Dentist we have ever had that we actually look forward to seeing. He makes the treatment pleasurable because of his great sense of humor and excellent work.

We hope to be his patients for many years to come.

This lady was soon to attend a close family wedding but she was unhappy and embarassed about her smile. She didn’t like her heavily discoloured, grey teeth and wanted to make then whiter so that she could smile in the photos.

We decided to use the teeth whitening system to give her the dazzling smile that she desired. We managed to change her teeth from a grey C2 shade to a shade near to B1. She was absolutely delighted with the immediate and instant result that we achieved.

To improve the smile further,  the patient has decides to undergo further cosmetic treatment.

There was a recent case reported in the British Medical Journal in which a woman swallowed a toothpick which went on to cause some quite serious further medical and health problems for her. This was also reported on the BBC, you can read the full BBC report here.

Clearly this woman was trying to clean her teeth with a toothpick, so we thought it would be a good idea to go through how to keep your teeth clean and hopefully avoid such accidents in the future!

You oral healthcare regime should include brushing, flossing and rinsing.

Teaching the people of Harrow how to brush.

  • Using an electric toothbrush is the best way to brush your teeth as they are designed to have the perfect action. If you use a manual brushing technique use a small brush and work in a circular motion.
  • Decide on a sequence to brushing your teeth and stick with it each day, ensuring that you brush the biting surface or tips of your teeth, the inside and then the outside.
  • Move around the sequence tooth by tooth. Avoid pressing too hard, but make sure you clean adequately. This is where an electric toothbrush will help as many of the better models have pressure sensors.
  • Ensure that you clean around the entire tooth surface right the way from the inside, over the top and down the front of the tooth including the junction between your tooth and the gum.

Top tips for flossing your teeth.

  • Floss daily between your teeth, this ensures that any debris is cleaned on the surfaces between your teeth which is so difficult to reach with a toothbrush.
  • Use a fairly long length of floss, about 30 cm. Wind the ends around your index fingers on each hand and pull floss taught.
  • You can then gently pop floss between each of your teeth each time winding it a small amount along on each finger.
  • Gently move the floss up and down against the back of one tooth and then the front of the next, pop floss back up again, and move along to the next tooth.

Rinsing with mouthwash.

Even with an electric toothbrush and flossing there may be small areas that you miss, so using a good-quality fluoride mouthwash will help you to rinse out any areas of debris that you have missed.
Rinse with mouthwash after every time you brush your teeth, both morning and night.
Our dental practice in Harrow also has a dental health educator known as a Dental Hygienist, this person is specially trained to help you look after your teeth and help you with your oral health plan. Looking after your teeth is the best way to spend as little time and money at the dentist as possible, so it’s a worthwhile investment in yourself.

This patient came for her routine appointment and on examination, early decay was detected on a tooth that had not been treated before.  She wanted her new tooth to look as natural as possible.

The decay was removed and the tooth was prepared for a filling.  A white composite filling material was used to fill the hole.  The colour was made to match her existing teeth and shaped to look as natural as possible.

The patient was delighted with the result.

To help keep your teeth healthy, it is advised that you eat only three or four times a day, avoiding the temptation to snack in between – and if you must snack, then choose something that has no or minimal amounts of sugar in it, such as cheese, nuts, raw vegetables or breadsticks.

This is because every time you eat or drink something with sugar, the bacteria in your mouth reacts with the sugar which produces acid that attacks your teeth.  If these attacks happen too often, your teeth will suffer decay.

In addition, you should avoid acidic or fizzy drinks, as these can cause tooth erosion, where the hard outer coating (enamel) of your teeth is gradually worn away by repeated acid attacks.

If you must eat or drink sweet stuff, either ensure it is sugar free ( low sugar or no added sugar still contains sugar!), or indulge less often – at or immediately after mealtimes is ideal.  You can also chew sugar-free gum with xylitol after eating or drinking to help boost saliva production and neutralise decay.

Below you can see a couple of pictures of common snacks and drinks with their equivalent sugar content.

This patient was very unhappy with her peg like tooth in her upper jaw.  The tooth appeared smaller and sharper than the rest of her teeth and was very visible when she smiled.  She wanted a more natural looking tooth with the least amount of tooth destruction possible.

To change the shape of the tooth, a white composite filling material was used.  The filling was blended with the existing tooth using the latest techniques, giving the tooth a very natural look.

The patient was delighted with the final result.
